It's Thanksgiving

(c) Dan Messenger, 2001 http://www.DanceTrends.org

Happy Thanksgiving! Yummmmmmmmy! It is one of my favorite holidays. It’s just great to relax, have a great turkey dinner and review my old dance tapes…NOT! First of all, I want to congratulate Sam Sodano on another successful and huge event! I had a good time but am a little "rhinestoned out" after six days of participating in the Ohio Star Ball. The only Aurora Borealis I want to see is in the night sky, and the only number I am going to see on some guys back is going to be on a grassy field with two goal posts at each end and NO PATTEN LEATHER SHOES! Ok, you heavy-duty dancers, you know how it is. It’s how a lot of us feel at the end of a competition. But…in a couple of days we are anxious to plan our next competition and the prestigious Ohio Star Ball will always be on the list of comps to attend. Why? Because if you are a serious dance junkie, a lover of ballroom dancing, competing and all that goes with it, the Ohio Star is where you can get 6 days of non-stop, high energy dancing. But now…I am going to watch some serious football. The Packers play the Lions. I send my condolences to all of my Michigan friends now. See, I even have my Packer fan attitude in place! It’s nice to take a break from my dance travels, but only for a while.
So, did any Dance Trends readers pay a few bucks to watch the Ohio Star Ball live on the Internet? If so, I would love to hear how you thoughtit went and if it was worth the bucks. As many of you know, PBS did not tape this year’s Ohio Star. Unfortunately, the funding wasn’t available this year. This puzzles me because I know it was one of their most popular shows. Well, maybe next year. So, is this the new wave of the future for Dancesport? Ballroom competitions on the Internet? I think it’s got great potential. I mean if you can’t be there live, the next best thing is to see it live, right?

Speaking of the future, sometimes I wonder where our sport is headed. Are we going down the right path and what is it we are hoping to find once we get there? Are we hoping to gain acceptance and recognition as a legitimate sport? Is it our goal to have Dancesport become a household word? Are we ever going to be able to turn on the television each week (or the internet) and watch Dancesport competition? The real question is: how do we go about accomplishing this and are we willing to put our differences aside to achieve all of the above? Next week, I would like to talk about transitions that seem to be occurring in the dance world. We do live in a time that has become so fast paced that sometimes change happens before our very eyes and we are not even aware of it. I hope you take advantage of this relaxing holiday. Relax and make sure to remind yourself of all that you have to be thankful for.

ENJOY!
