Ok, this one
is a quickie! I want to talk about blind faith. Blind
faith is what you have to have in order to succeed
in the dance world or any other sport, job, venture
etc... It is when you put your trust in someone even
when you are not sure where it will take you. It's
when your coach tells you "If you stand on your
head for ten minutes a day it will make you a better
dancer". (That was just an example, so get off
your head and come back to the computer!). Seriously
though, we depend on people with more knowledge than
us to help us to get where they are at. Sometimes
they can explain, in easy terms, what it is they want
us to do and sometimes they say "just do it"
without much explanation. Obviously, the scary part
of having blind faith in someone is... WHAT IF THEY
ARE WRONG!
I was judging a competition a couple
of weeks ago and out on to the floor walked a dancer
with hair that was a color I had never seen before,
and I was thinking to myself, "Now, there's a
girl with blind faith....blind coach....blind partner"!
Why would a pretty girl, who, by the way, was a very
good dancer, tint her hair the color of an obstacle
course safety cone? Wouldn't her coach recommend a
more real hair color? Then it hit me! The old saying,
"Desperate times require desperate measures".
Maybe she felt she wasn't being seen by the judges
and by doing something so outrageous, it would draw
their attention. It may appear negative at first,
but if they watch, they will see what a good dancer
she is! (Actually, I have seen this work but you had
better make sure you can back it up!). On the other
hand, wouldn't life be boring if everyone looked like
Ken and Barbie? Isn't this part of the lure of our
sport, the diversity of the people? Let's face it,
life is just not that exciting when you work at the
post office! More normal or mainstream, maybe, but
not as exciting! So, let's hear for the girl who had
guts enough to have hair the color of bug light yellow!
Let's hear it for the couple who were daring enough
to try a new style, a new look!
So, whether one thinks of
this strategy on their own, or they had blind faith
in a coach or a friend, it is what makes DanceSport
so interesting and attractive to so many. Yes, a bit
eccentric at times but, nonetheless, an important
part of dance.
